Heart disease and stroke often result from a narrowing of the blood vessels. This narrowing can severely reduce or even stop blood flow to important organs like the heart or brain. Blood carries oxygen and important nutrients to cells in the body. Without oxygen, heart muscle cells or brain cells begin to die. The term "heart disease" is often used interchangeably with "cardiovascular disease." Cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as infections and conditions that affect your heart's muscle, valves or beating rhythm, also are considered forms of heart disease.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), over one million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Research has led to better methods of diagnosing and treating this disease. The NCI says skin cancer is now almost 100 percent curable if found early and treated promptly. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. There are two types – UVA and UVB. Sunlamps and tanning booths which are artificial forms of UV radiation, can also cause skin cancer.

Skin cancer generally develops in the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin), so a tumor can usually be seen. This means that it is often possible to detect skin cancers at an early stage. Unlike many other cancers, including those originating in the lung, pancreas, and stomach, only a small minority of those affected will actually die of the disease, though it can be disfiguring. Melanoma survival rates are poorer than for non-melanoma skin cancer, although when melanoma is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is easier and more people survive.
Most children and adults should see their dentist for a regular cleaning and check up every six months. People at a greater risk for oral diseases should have dental check ups more than twice a year. Tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene and certain medical conditions are some of the many factors that your dentist takes into consideration when deciding how often you need your dental cleaning and check up. Going to your regular check ups will help to keep your gums and teeth healthy as well as detect any early problems such as gum disease, oral cancer and cavities. The best way to maintain good oral health is to visit your dentist on a regular basis.

On average, seeing a dentist twice a year works well for most people. A few people can get away with fewer visits. Others may need more frequent visits. People with very little risk of cavities or gum disease can do fine seeing their dentist just once a year. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months, or more. The schedule for any person may change during a lifetime. In times of stress or illness, you may need to see the dentist more often than usual. The dentist may help you to fight off a temporary infection or treat changes in your mouth.

Planning for retirement is not just a financial issue. You need to be able to replace the social contacts that you have had on a day to day basis at work. One problem is that workers only see what is right in front of them, says Lauren Locker, a financial planner at Locker Financial Services. If they don't know what to do differently when they retire, it can put them into depression.

All but one of the ill stayed in a set of 91 cabins in the park's Curry Village area. The eighth visited several High Sierra camps in another part of the park, had mild symptoms and is now recovering, according to Yosemite. Hantavirus is contracted by breathing in small viral particles released into the air from the urine or droppings of infected deer mice or other rodents. There is no known cure, and about 38% of those who contract the disease die. Eight people are known to have contracted hantavirus pulmonary syndrome between June and mid-August, and three of them died, Yosemite reported last week. The dead include a Kanawha County, W.Va., resident who stayed at Yosemite in June and died within two weeks of the trip.

Yosemite decided to close the cabins after health officials received test results on Aug. 27 on mice trapped in the area since Aug. 16. The tests showed the hantavirus infection rate among deer mice was at its normal rate of about 14%, but there were "many more mice" than usual in the area, the spokeswoman said. Health officials also found some cabins were vulnerable to the mice entering. The cabins were closed on Aug. 28, after six cases had been confirmed, including two deaths. A spokeswoman for the California Department of Public Health said no cases have been confirmed in people who stayed at Yosemite after Aug. 16.
Farris has traveled a long way to operate on River Region pets. The native of southern Germany first came to America when she was 20 for an internship at a veterinarian’s office. Inspired to enter the field, she attended Auburn University’s acclaimed vet school and became a doctor of veterinary medicine. She opted to stay in the United States where her career seemed more promising, she said. She’s been in America a decade, and has worked at Montgomery Veterinary Associates since 2009.

For every veterinarian the day is never routine, and no two days are ever alike. It requires caring for both healthy and sick animals. This includes examinations and vaccinations, diagnosing diseases and injuries, and treating animals with medicine or surgery. The workday will be quite different as well for veterinarians who work in meat- and milk-processing plants, making sure that our food is safe to eat. There are veterinarians who do research in laboratories, working to discover new treatments, procedures and medicines for both animals and people. Some veterinarians care for animals in zoos or circuses, while others teach students in colleges of veterinary medicine to become future veterinarians. So it's a profession that offers a lot of different work environments.

Particular attention should be paid to kids with insulin resistance, Convit said. It is unclear how metabolic syndrome might lead to cognitive problems, but one theory is that insulin resistance makes it difficult for the brain to get sufficient glucose needed to fuel higher-level thinking and learning. While obesity has been a primary target for wellness programs, Convit said weight itself should not be the target, but the symptoms of metabolic syndrome, which can be assessed by a pediatrician and often improved by exercise.
